Hearing set for woman accused of locking children in bedroom

A Madison County judge set a preliminary hearing date for a woman accused of leaving her children locked in a bedroom without food or access to a bathroom.

Norma Garcia and Jose Cassiano Vargas both face three counts of child torture-willful abuse of a child. The couple was arrested earlier this fall.

Court documents show the children were not only locked in the bedroom, but left unattended for up to three hours. The children are ages two, three and five.

Huntsville Police Investigators report the children had signs of abuse and malnourishment.

Garcia will be in court November 28. Vargas has a hearing November 21. They are both in the Metro Jail.
