HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- Trans fats found in all kinds of foods are bad for your heart and bad for your health. In fact, they are considered the worst kind of fat and they are a large contributor to heart disease.
Trans fats have slowly disappeared from restaurant menus and grocery store aisles in an effort to promote healthy eating, but now the Food and Drug Administration is taking things a step further. The FDA announced Thursday it will require the food industry to gradually phase out all trans fats.
Restaurants that currently still use trans fats will have to get creative when it comes to preparing their food. It will change the ingredients they use, as well as their prices.
In Huntsville, locally-owned restaurant Mama Annie's has been open for nearly a decade. In that time, owner Henry Carter has been careful to stay away from trans fats because of the health risks. He has found other ways to cook, like sautéing, broiling, and smoking.
